Attendance Report
Rachel Viney - Assistant Principal
Our recent data shows that 67.8% of students have attended school for 90% or above in 2025. At Mount Nelson Primary, we care about ensuring we create a safe and welcoming school environment for all our students to feel nurtured, empowered and able to strive for excellence. Please keep in contact with your child’s teacher if you have any questions about how we can support you and your child around attendance.
Literacy
Marg Crosswell - Literacy Coach
To support schools with implementing a systematic approach to Literacy, centrally funded resources are being supplied to each school, and some will be distributed in Term 3.
These resources will be arriving soon and will include new sets of Decodable readers, fluency passages and a collection of High-Quality Instructional materials, for reading to and with students.
We are looking forward to having access to a broader selection of materials that encourage our students to develop their thinking, reading and understanding of texts.
LiL - Little Seeds
Georgie Field - AST/Teacher
Our LiL sessions for term 3 commence next week, Thursday 7 August.
We encourage our community to spread the word and invite families who may be interested in bringing their little ones along. This free program is available to children from birth to 4 years. LiL offers a fantastic opportunity for children to engage in construction, play, and fine/gross motor activities while beginning to build a connection to school.
Please see our term 3 timetable below.
Class Spotlight - Kinder
The Kinder Echidnas were delighted to be visited by John, an expert beekeeper (and wonderful Kinder grandparent).
John shared lots of information about being a beekeeper. He taught us how bees make honey and store it in his beehive, as well as showing us how he collects the honey and looks after the hive. John’s bees make delicious honey from the flowers in his garden, and we were all very lucky to have a taste! Kinder students have been writing a book all about bee’s and beekeeping from what they have learnt. A big thankyou to John for visiting us and to Jock and Jane for organising his visit.
Movie Night Fundraiser
Save the date! - Friday 8 August
Get ready for a fun-filled evening at our Movie Night Fundraiser!
Tickets will be $20 ($10 for siblings) - includes Movie, BBQ tea, drink & Freddo.
Tickets are available on the QKR! app and permission slips must be returned to class teachers.
All proceeds will go towards making our Grade 6 camp extra special! - We hope to see you there!
Swimming & Water Safety
Our Swimming and Water Safety Program concludes tomorrow. We’re so proud of the progress our students have made over the past few weeks. From building confidence in the water to learning important safety and survival skills, every student gave their best effort and embraced the challenges with enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see the enjoyment on students’ faces as they participated in each session.
A big thank you to families for your support in ensuring students were prepared each day. These skills are vital for life, and we’re pleased to have provided such a valuable experience for our learners.
Winter Sports
Our Year 5/6 Football and Netball teams have kicked off their Winter Sports Roster this term, recently competing against Taroona Primary School on our school oval. It has been wonderful to see our school values in action throughout these afternoons, with students demonstrating collaboration, self-management, and communication as they learned the rules and supported one another in newly formed teams.
Thank you to Christie Crow for taking on coaching the netball team. It is great to have our students learn from someone with great passion for the game.
Our next game is scheduled against Lansdowne Crescent Primary School, and we look forward to another afternoon of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun.

Do you have any pets?
Yes, just a few tropical fish.
Where is your favourite place to travel to?
My favourite place to travel to is Bruny Island.
If you weren’t in this role, what would be your dream job?
If I wasn’t in this role, I would love to be a police officer.
Art - Young Archies Competition
It has been incredibly exciting and rewarding to view all the entries from our Prep to Year 6 students in the Young Archies Competition. Students brought in photos of the person they chose to draw and shared thoughtful stories about why they selected their special person. These portraits reflect not only artistic skill but also deep personal connections and storytelling.
As part of our inquiry into portraiture and visual storytelling, students have been encouraged to think deeply about the art-making process. This inquiry approach helps students connect their creative choices with broader artistic concepts and personal meaning. It also encourages curiosity, reflection, and appreciation of diverse perspectives in art.
Finalists across the year groups will be sent to Learning Services South for final judging alongside entries from other schools. In the meantime, we invite everyone to enjoy the fabulous work currently on display in our corridors and classrooms.
A special thank you to our amazing Art Teacher, Sarah Chiu, whose talent and dedication continue to draw out the very best in our students. Her guidance and encouragement have helped shape these beautiful and meaningful pieces of work.
New School Leggings
Our first shipment of the new school leggings has arrived!
Our students are pleased with them and say they are very comfortable. We will be placing another order soon. They are priced at $30 and are available in sizes 4-16. Pre-orders will be available via QKR!
School Association
We warmly invite all parents and carers to attend our School Association meetings. They provided a great opportunity to hear about what’s happening at our school, to share your ideas, and get involved in planning events and supporting student learning. Your voice matters, and we’d love to see new faces as well as our regulars. Come along to our brainstorming session this evening, stay informed, and help make a positive difference in our school community!
Playground Update
During the school holidays, we had our new soccer goals installed! The students have been eager to use them at every opportunity.
They sometimes just need a gentle reminder: they’re for playing soccer—not for climbing like monkey bars!
We’ve also replaced the pole protectors on our netball and basketball courts. They look much better and really enhance the safety and appearance of our courts.
